H.E. Juan Carlos Varela

Juan Carlos Varela R., was elected President of the Republic of Panama on May 4, 2014 for the constitutional term from July 1st 2014 to June 30th 2019.

Previously, he was elected Vice President of the Republic (2009-2014) and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama (2009-2011). In this capacity he fulfilled his campaign social promises, including: the “100 at 70 Program” which consists in a pension for senior panamanians without retirement, the Universal Scholarship and the” Curundú Housing Project”, among others, that have improved the quality of life of hundreds of thousands of Panamanians.

President Varela comes from the private sector, where he led the growth of a Panamanian company with over 100 years of history that has generated thousands of jobs in our country: Varela Hermanos, S.A. There he served as a director since 1985 and was Executive Vice President until January 2008. With a large social view from the private sector, Varela supported and promoted projects on education, culture, sports, folklore and environment.

President Varela obtained his degree of Industrial Engineer at the “Georgia Institute of Technology”, United States. Varela was born in Panama, on 12 December 1963 and he is married to Lorena Castillo and father of three children.
